Tradedoubler Tracker – November 2003

The Tradedoubler Tracker is a monthly report detailing online sales volumes and trends across Europe, based on Tradedoubler’s monitoring of sales made through its European network. It is published at the start of each calendar month and the content is based on data assimilated during the previous month.

Highlights

1. An increase in the number of online sales from Oct-Nov 02 to Oct-Nov 03 of 220%

Rationale:
  • Internet penetration has risen over the last year, especially broadband connection
  • More people now trust the Internet as a secure shopping vehicle
  • Advertisers have improved both the functionality of their sites and their general proposition
  • Tradedoubler has increased the amount of advertisers and publishers within its network
  • The advertisers are incentivising more and better quality publishers through attractive referral commissions
  • Tradedoubler has improved the linking methods used by publishers, including the use of product feeds, thereby increasing the conversion of traffic to sales

2. A 66% increase in the number of online sales from October 2003 to November 2003 across Europe

Rationale:
  • Sales have increased in the run up to Christmas
  • Internet is increasingly used not only for information but to fulfil retail transactions

3. Sales value growth of 128% from November 2002 to November 2003

Rationale:
  • People are beginning to trust the Internet more and are willing to spend larger volumes of money, often in a single transaction

4. Daily online sales rise at around 11am, peaking at 3pm. They then plateau between 5.30pm and 7.30pm and increase again between 7.30pm and 10.30pm when they taper off for the day

Rationale:
  • Prime TV viewing times are now prime Internet shopping times
  • This is supported by the latest reserach by European Interactive Advertising Association (published 2 December 2003) highlighting the increasing trend to watch less TV since the advent of the web, with nearly 45% of consumers surveyed saying they watch less TV as a result of using the internet

5. Monday is the most popular day for shopping online, while Saturday is the least popular

Rationale:
  • Traditional offline shopping increases at the weekend, when people have more leisure time, affecting the volume of online sales
